Short stories
A photographer hired to witness a murder, a colour-blind sperm donor, a ghost who misses his friends, a Canadian who pretends he's from Latvia, and a woman sure her children's will be the last human generation - these are just some of the fascinating characters with leading roles in this poignant collection of short stories. These stories are amusing, touching, sometimes comical and occasionally sad.

This second collection of stories carries on some of the themes from the first - indeed, some individuals from the earlier collection make their reappearance here. Characters include a lascivious businessman who prefers lady-boys to ladies, a depressed sea-captain who threatens to sink his own ferry, a woman who eats more than just food, and a Thai widow who's looking for her late husband's roots in Crete.

This new collection brings you more stories from Thailand and elsewhere. There's a man who falls in love with part of himself, a wife who's kidnapped by incompetents, an other-worldly story of salvation, a short-story writer who's confused about dates, a old woman dying of dementia and a murderer brought to justice by his own imagination. These stories have humour, tragedy and plot twists, but are always thoughtful.

Characters whose tales are told in my fourth collection of short stories include a bank teller who suspects a colleague of murder, an old man who loses his shorts, a butcher reminiscing with his biggest customer and a ladyboy searching for love. Then there's the diary of one of the last two people on Earth, a market-stall tableau and a vision of eternity based on a favourite W B Yeats poem. It all adds up to a pretty varied selection.
