What was life like for the rural poor in 18th century England? As advancing technology made many farm workers redundant, their families were left without support. This fascinating book looks at the work of the Guardians of the Poor in the village of Metfield, Suffolk and reveals not dry committee minutes but a story of everyday life. Real characters emerge who we come to know just as progress was passing them by.

Evelyn Whiting’s charming Suffolk memoir, published posthumously, shows that making a living from the land was hard in the 1930s. There was no electricity, and water came from the sky or the pond. Evelyn is a great storyteller; as we draw near – as it were, by the fire in the Old Duke William in Metfield – to hear her tell of the characters she recalls so well, and glimpse a way of life that most of us have never known.

This is the story of a man coming to terms with his own mortality - and the emotional journey that led to his survival. Originally diagnosed with colon cancer, David I Brown fought to endure the treatment, only to find that the disease had spread to his liver. Further surgery saved his life again. It was an experience that helped him realise what he thought he already knew, but really didn’t: that he could die.
